On Wednesday, March 30, suspects in a silver Audi — believed to be stolen out of Clifton — attempted to steal a vehicle on Todd Road, Toms RIver police said.
The vehicle’s owner was inside the car at the time and startled the suspect who then fled the area, police said.
Immediately after, the same suspects purportedly made attempts to steal vehicles in Wall Township.
The vehicle was most likely targeted due to the position of the mirrors, which allowed the suspects to see it was unlocked, police said.
Motorists are urged to lock car doors 24 hours of the day as New Jersey is experiencing a surge in auto thefts.
There have been over 700 reported vehicle thefts in NJ in 2022, police said.
